The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
