Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
